Types of Dental EmergenciesKnocked Out or Dislodged Teeth - Accidents happen to everyone, but when teeth are knocked out, you will want to contact us soon after. For a child, store their tooth in milk and make an appointment to have them seen by our dentist within two to three hours. In an adult, the prognosis after dental trauma improves with the urgency of treatment.Cracked or Broken Teeth –
Even minor cracks or breaks can lead to infection or further damage if not treated in a timely fashion. Applying dental cement until you can secure an appointment will protect the integrity of the remaining tooth structure. When you visit us for care, we will smooth any chips and if necessary provide root canal therapy. For larger cracks, a porcelain crown restores and improves stability.Restoration Complications –
If you have a crown or filling that falls out, we recommend you set it aside and do not try to reseat it, for this increase your risk of swallowing it. You can use dental cement, dental wax, or a piece of sugarless gum to protect the remaining tooth until you can see us for treatment.Pain and Swelling –
These symptoms can result from trauma, or more commonly, from infection. An important first step would be to thoroughly clean out the area and see us as soon as possible. Swishing with warm salt water can alleviate discomfort and reduce infection. We can call in a prescription for antibiotics, and if the pain is severe enough, we may send you to the emergency room.
